So Many Quilts, So Little Time!

A Change of Pace

...is just what the doctor ordered.

I could not face more pink and black triangles, so I turned to a little FMQ and finished, yes finished, my Easter Table Runner by Kim Diehl.

I simply copied what had been done on the original and I could not be more pleased with it. Only took 2 1/2 years to complete, BUT it is my first UFO truly finished for 2012!

Since I am expecting (well, that is, my DD is expecting) to be doing a lot waiting in a hospital in the near future, I also prepped some handwork.

All the wool shapes are cut and over half the blocks are blanket stitched.

The rest are packed in my bag ready to head out when the call comes.

Hopefully, I will get back to those pink and black triangles later this week and finish up this months PG stocking. 2 out of 3 goals accomplished is not bad!

Getting Closer

My 1880 sampler quilt is set, sashed and the first border is on.

My goal this week is to finish the first sawtooth border.

Like all big projects, I am so ready for this one to be done.

Thanks to Mary at Quilt Hollow, I have some new novelties for the windows of my scrappy houses. It was so kind of her to send them to me and I can hardly wait to make a few more houses!

However, they will be my reward for finishing all those HSTs!

Since I seem to be on a roll, I will set my Feb. goals:

(1) Finish up the 1880 quilt top...

praying I have enough fabric.

(2) Quilt my Easter Table Runner

(3) Finish up one X-stitch ornament

(4) Stitch one more PG stocking

and then return to my Pinwheels for Caroline...

my next UFO to finish.

I received my copy of the latest APQ magazine and have fallen in love with the cover quilt by Kim Diehl...

so cheery for a spring project!

Christmas Through the Year

Finished 2 projects to use as gifts next year.

My Blackbird designs mini X-stitch ornament and

another Primitive Gatherings Wool Stocking.

I think these will be great with a candy cane and twig to go on the top of packages.

A big thanks to Darlene and Cheryl for keeping us motivated.

I have a good start on my Feb. ornament as well.

It will be hard to stay on track with these goals when I am so obsessed with these:

the nursery and

the patriot's home.

However, true to my promise, finishing up my 1880 Sampler is my primary February goal.

Cross your fingers I can accomplish it.

And BTW, I did finish all the applique on my Easter table runner!

Quilting it is on the list for Feb.

Construction Zone

Although our housing industry is in a slump, there still seems to be a lot of building going on in blogland.

Here are my first few houses for Jeanneke's Building Houses from Scrap.

Beware though! They are addicting.

I thought I would be lucky to make perhaps just one block a week; but once I got started, it is all I want to do. I have decided to paper piece mine (the pattern is available on her website.)

I just love choosing the fabrics for each house and fussy cutting out what I want in the windows.

They will be such fun to use in small quilts to give as Christmas presents next year.

Unfortunately, my machine is about to go into storage.

Having a big party here (baby shower) soon, and I need to focus my attention there.

With that said, I apologize for not posting the border instructions for the 1880 Sampler Quilt.

I promise it will be my priority in the first week of February.

Just keep working on those HST units until then.

January's Goals

Over the holidays, I buttonhole stitched the first 6 blocks of my

Lori Smith Fit to Frame Number Six

small quilt.

Today I cut the wool shapes for the next two blocks.

This is a WIP I have promised myself to complete

before I start on another new project...

Country Whig Rose by Kim Diehl.

I continue to make progress on my DD's wedding quilt

with a few new flowers added to the garden.

I do have the wool prepped and half way stitched down for this month's stocking.

I have yet to start on the 110 HST's needed to border my 1880 Barbara Buchner Snyder Sampler,

but that will be my machine project for the month.

So, the only other goal I have for the month is to finish at least one UFO.

This adorable Easter Table Runner is calling to me.

Can I do it?

A New Year Full of Joy

I so enjoyed my holiday break with my family and hope everyone had a merry time as well!

However, I am glad to be back in my sewing room, full of new energy and inspiration.

First, I would like to share a few gifts I received from some dear quilting friends in Texas.

Kay presented me with this needle keep, exquisitely adorned with her ribbon embroidery!

Rosie always has a way with words, and this plaque proves it.

(We are WWF addicts...contemplating a 26 step program soon!)

She included another special gift...

...because the biggest change in my life this new year is that I will be a first time grandma!

While eating my way out of my jeans and enjoying a white Christmas,

I did get some handwork completed.

The first stocking from the Primitive Gatherings Woolen Stockings collection,

and...

another X-stitch ornament.

Darlene, of Quilting Daze, and I have challenged each other to complete one ornament per month and one extra to share. Darlene has also taken up the gauntlet for the Christmas Through the Year bloggy club.

I am joining and setting my goal to finish a stocking a month and an ornament a month. I will also try to throw in a gift a month as well, but don't want to pressure myself.

I have a few other commitments already!

Besides....

I will have all those things to make for my new grandchild...sex to be announced at birth!

Twas the weekend before Christmas...

I cannot show you many of the projects,

since the recipients read my blog,

but I can share a few things.

A Quaker Snowman

I started this fellow last year with the hopes of stitching ornaments for each of my children, but alas, he became a UFO stashed in the back of my closet.

Then I saw Carol's, of Stitching Dreams, post here and it inspired me to start stitching again.

A visit to The Attic Needleworks shop in Mesa, AZ left me rather light in the pocketbook, but full of ideas and materials to make enough ornaments to adorn my own garland next year.

And what do you do with left over jelly roll strips?

Why make an adorable photo album cover.

Wish I could take credit for this one, but again it was that creative DD of mine who came up with the idea and embellishments.

For those of you following the progress of the 1880 sampler, I invite you to check out the flickr group. Carol has sashed and set her beautiful blocks and posted a picture for our pleasure.

I was not too successful with keeping up with the CW QAL hosted by Barbara Brackman this year, but that did not stop me from joining Jeanneke's Building Houses from Scraps 2012 project.

And I am jolly

for a couple of reasons!

Another collaborative affair to make an apron and matching coasters for my

DD's grandparents in-law

...now that is a mouthful.

I have finished drafting and constructing the last block in my

Barbara Buchner Synder 1880 Sampler quilt!

Hurrah!

I will take a break over the holidays and be back in the New Year with the border instructions.

Some leaders and enders while piecing the sampler block have lead to multiple pinwheels

that will be used in small quilts to be given as gifts!

Lastly,

the first batch of Christmas cookies is done.

Only 5 more to go!

How Does My Garden Grow?

Faster than I thought it would!

Yesterday I ordered a new group of fabrics from www.gloriouscolor.com that includes an assortment of dots to use as the centers of each flower. I am finally comfortable with piecing the hexies and they are a tad more enjoyable. What motivates me is that my DD is quite smitten with the design so far.

I finished quilting the baby quilt with time to spare.

I used a variegated 40 wt. thread and had fun with some continuous line FMQ.

Very pleased with the result.

Now to the binding...my daughter's job!

For me, I better start on those Christmas gifts!

Thankful for a DD who is crafty!

It was a hectic, but thoroughly scrumptious Thanksgiving week around here. I hope everyone ate as much as I did so we can all go on diets together. Some exhilarating outdoor exercise is called for in the following days. We are enjoying some exceptionally fine days here in the desert...crisp, cool nights and clear days in the high 70's. This is why we endure our sizzling summers!

While the turkey was roasting, my DD and I collaborated on a sweet little baby quilt for her girlfriend. It is an adaptation of a pattern seen in

Jelly Babies

from the staff at That Patchwork Place.

It is pin basted and ready to be quilted by moi. Of course, the baby shower is this weekend...

like mother, like daughter.

She also whipped up this nifty matching frame.

I love the little yo-yo's in the corners.

I have been busy finishing up my 1880 sampler quilt.

I believe I only have one more block to do and then I need to design the borders.

I will take a break though and be back in the new year with those instructions.

While blog hopping the other day, I jumped into a hilarious post.

Check out Regan's blog post here for a good laugh.
She lists the things that she is thankful she doesn't have and doesn't want...
I liked the reference to the 'boob job'.
I could not come up with a better list than hers, but I do know I am thankful I have a DD who shares my love of crafting and quilting.

...a new project.

After seeing this 'Fit to be Framed' pattern #6 by Lori Smith carried out in wools at the Houston Festival, I have been beset by it. I am using cotton backgrounds though, specifically Lisa Bongean's Little Gatherings by Moda.. Wool would be a little too 'imperfect' for my quilter's OCD. I have also acquired a greater appreciation for Lori's work. I cannot fathom how she was able to complete these 6" finished blocks using needle turn applique. Can you see all those tiny, sharp curves in the tree, for example!

SO,
I am not enamored with hexies, but truly want to complete my daughter's wedding quilt. Therefore, I have set a goal of making 2 hexagons per day, first thing in the morning with my very first cuppa of Joe. Hopefully, this will help me to complete one flower each week.

Two projects were removed from my WIP list while at least 3 were added.

I am getting down to the last blocks of my 1880 Sampler quilt.

Next block is a 'crumb' block.

I have never made one, but assume you just sew scraps randomly together. My plan is to make four different 3" units and assemble them into a block. Hope it works. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also pieced my first hexie.

Harder than I thought!

This is a large one...about 10 1/2" in diameter.

My project for the day is to make fresh pumpkin puree. I am coming to the conclusion that it might be more cost effective to purchase canned. We will see if the taste is dramatically different before the final verdict.

I have baked them in my convection oven, but it still took over an hour and only yields about a cup of puree.

Anyone every cooked them in the microwave?

I have about 100 lbs. of sugar pumpkins from my summer garden and hate to just toss them!

2011 Houston International Quilt Festival

I am back from the festival, but don't have a lot of photos to share.

From the grand prize winners, I only selected one quilt to share with you.

The festival this year seemed to be all about art quilts, heavily embellished and masterfully machine quilted. Although I admire these artisans, my interests lie in the traditional quilts, which there were very few of.

Challenge 2

This quilt was one of the few traditional quilts that really attracted my eye. Its design source is Elly Sienkiewicz and won a ribbon for Merit Quilting, Hand.

And her hand quilting was exquisite!

Found in the small exhibit of American Traditional Quilts.

I loved how she fussy cut her fabrics.

I did enjoy the exhibit "Texas Quilts Today...", but could not take photos.

And, I missed the doll quilt and bed exhibit.

This small exhibit of houses designed by a variety of fabric artists was visually rich...

and very whimsical!

But after a whirlwind walk through the quilts, I headed to the vendors.

It didn't seem as crowded as I had remembered, but I still would start down one aisle only to collide with a mass of determined shoppers and quickly retreat. The number of choices I was faced with was totally overwhelming for me. As a result, I came home with very little, which actually makes me happy.

I did brave the Primitive Gatherings booth, but escaped unscathed when I saw the long line at the register. I picked up and put down several patterns in the Country Threads booth...when will I ever make all the quilts I already have patterns for?

Lori Smith's booth was also very tempting, but all I purchased was some wools from Mary Flanagan Woolens, where she gave me permission to photograph her wool version of one of Lori's patterns.

I also picked up some fabrics and hexie papers to get started on my daughter's wedding quilt.

There was a large number of antique quilt vendors with high quality wares. I came very close to coming home with one, but my budget just would not let me make the leap. In Mary Koval's booth of beautiful antique quilts, I had the pleasure of meeting Linda Collins from Quilts in the Barn. We chatted briefly, but I forgot to get a picture of us together.

Going to Houston for me this year was more about reconnecting with old friends and meeting a few new ones. My host and hostess were the best! I lunched with my old tennis partner, laughed the afternoon away with my friend Lori, caught up with other quilting friends, played Chinese Checkers with Rosie's precious grandson, dined on delectable home cooked meals, and even took in the King Tut exhibit.

Now that I am home, it will take dynamite to get me to leave for at least 6 months! I look forward to the upcoming holidays and some simple family times...

at home!

Fall is finally here!

Fall arrives late to the desert and without much of a fuss.

We know it is here when the daytime temps are under 90 and we can open our windows to clean, crisp air at night.

I am envious of those of you who are enjoying the colors of the season, so I need to bring some of it to my environment with quilting projects.

Picked up the newest Sew Scrappy by BH&G and fell instantly in love with this project by Lynda Hall. Of course, Renee Nanneman's new homespun collection also arrived at TOWQS and will be perfect for it.

It will be my reward for finishing up my prep work for the Farmer's Wife Club meeting tomorrow...yes, I am a procrastinator!

This week I was the lucky recipient of these two lovely stitcheries from a dear quilting friend, Deb.

I believe this one is called O' Pumpkin Tree and I will finish it with my new homespun fabrics.

This little guy is going to get some special treatment, but stay tuned for that.

I want to design a medallion style quilt around him using black and orange fabrics.

Finally, my quilt, Autumn Houses by Bunnyhill, came back yesterday from a very talented machine quilter. Carol is an artist who plies her craft on her 20+ year old Bernina.

Here is a sampling of the wonderful enhancements she applied to my quilt.

I love how she added the vines and flowers in the open spaces.

I LOVE IT!

I'll be heading to Houston next week for the festival. I will try to come home with lots of pics to share and not too much merchandise. However, the Primitive Gatherings booth will be first on my list of places to visit and you cannot count on me using even a modicum of self control there!

But first, back to FW blocks and the next 1880 Sampler blocks. Lots to do before I leave.

The log cabin blocks are 2 1/2" finished...I like miniatures!

I knew I could not stay on task!!

Besides, I can take this as handwork on my plane ride.

Our beautiful daughter married "her best friend and the man of her dreams" this past weekend. It was an amazing day full of joy and laughter.

Now back to some pressing projects. This week will be a machine quilting week. I have quite a few tops in the queue. Hopefully, I will have two to show by the end of the week.

I also need to get a backing ready so Autumn Houses is ready to go to the quilter at the end of the month.

Tales from Telluride...

also known as 'To Hell You Ride' in 1889.

Telluride is infamous as the mining town where Robert Parker, aka Butch Cassidy of the Wild Bunch Gang, robbed his first bank in 1889 for a little over $20,000. It fascinated me to learn that Butch, or Bob, learned to defy the establishment as a young teen in Utah. First, by helping his family run an underground railroad for Mormon polygamist escaping persecution in the Midwest, and then as a cattle rustler with his mentor, Mike Cassidy. Unlike Butch, who came to Telluride for its money making opportunities, we came to hike at high altitude and parted with a good sum of money!

Although expensive, the town is charming with its brightly painted homes, historical buildings, fine cuisine and breathtaking views.

Upon the advice of our host at the Wildwood Canyon Inn B&B, we chose the Bridal Veil Basin for our hike. Getting to the basin was the beginning of our adventure and involved climbing 1,200 ft. up a gravel, 4-wheel drive trail to the top of the falls. The picture above of the valley floor was taken about half way up the road.

Perched on the top of the falls is a small hydroelectric plant built in 1907 by the Smugglers Union Mine. Bulkley Wells, Harvard graduate and the mine manager for over 20 years, convinced the mine's owners to build the power plant to help defray fuel costs. At the same time, he convinced them to build a 12 room 'apartment' atop the plant so he could "entertain in style while looking down on the workers below." It is rumored the notorious womanizer entertained more lady friends than business clients. The home was abandoned by Wells when the plant closed. It was privately owned and restored around 2000, but is now vacant. Although listed on the National Register of Historical homes, there are no plans to open it to the public.

Once we gained access to the area above the falls, we chose the Gray's Basin/ Mayflower Mine trail since it was touted as a 'memorable' hike. That was an understatement! The day started out cold with a high, misty cloud cover, but we are prepared backcountry hikers and had our rain gear. After climbing a little over 1800 ft. into the Gray's Basin and less than a few 100 yds away from the mine, the rain turned into a bone chilling snow.

Although my DH desperately wanted to explore the mine (just above his left shoulder), our common sense prevailed and we decided to head back.

When the skies cleared briefly, I captured the first snow of the season on the peaks around the basin.

Although we were early for the trees to turn, the remnants of the wildflowers of a month ago provided some fall color for a few photos.

The good news was that at 11,953 ft. I experienced no altitude sickness.

Therefore, I will not need one of these while hiking in Peru!

For those with great eyes, you can see that the birds at the top still need to be sewn down.

I love this quilt, but I am so ready for it to be done!

Also finished piecing the center of Pinwheels for Caroline, so my next goal is to finish the ocean waves blocks for the border.

This weekend was the balloon fest here in Pagosa Springs. I was a tad tardy getting myself there on Saturday, but managed a few pics on Sunday.

Notice the carved statue below the balloon.

There are several of these around town.

We are headed to Ouray and Telluride this am for some higher altitude hiking and then back to Arizona at the end of the week. It is freezing here this morning (my house was 58 degrees when I climbed out of bed...good quilt snuggling weather!) I am sure I will miss it once I return to the heat of the desert.

Rainy Day Blues???

A crisp, clean rain is falling today and I am loving it!

US Open tennis to watch and sewing to be done...serendipity!

I finished piecing Holiday Happenings, designed by Monique Dillard.

I have a long list of tops that need to be quilted now.

I saw an interesting adaptation of cross hatching on Diane Gaudynski's blog called Houndstooth.

It might look interesting on the borders. My first inclination is just to do continuous line quilting in the pieced blocks and maybe wreaths in the light squares.

Any ideas on how to machine quilt this one...holiday themed?

Finished 2 more blocks for my sampler.

I seriously love these blocks in the brown and pink colorway!

Slowly, but surely, I am appliqueing those little willow tree leaves on the last block of Autumn Houses.

What a painful process it has been...7 more to sew down.

At night, we hear a bone chilling, bleating sound that we could not identify.

Yesterday evening we discovered its source.

A coyote has moved into the valley behind the cabin.

A family of foxes has inhabited the area for the last few years.

Mr. Fox is the source of the noise.

He is admantly barking (sounds more like bleating though) at the coyote to leave his feeding grounds.

I love Mr. Fox's tail.

My rainy day goal is to finish those darn leaves, and then finish piecing the center of Pinwheels for Caroline. Wish me luck and don't forget to leave any suggestions for how to quilt my Holiday Happenings.

Countdown to Christmas

Holiday Happenings,

'Quilts and More.'

This is my Labor Day weekend project.

I plan to teach it as an introduction to quilt piecing class this fall. My schedule will not permit a full beginning class until 2012. I have opted to make it a square instead of the long runner seen in the photo.

Advent calendars were always one of my kids' favorites.

It felt good on Friday to hit the trails again. Only 31 days until we leave for the 13,000 ft mountains of Peru. I was surprised how winded I got after being away for less than 2 weeks. We will head to Ouray this next week to get even higher in hopes of building up some excess red blood cells. I'll need all I can get!

While hiking, I found yet another member of the Gentian family that I will add to my Wildflower page. I captured a picture of the Fringed Gentian in full bloom.

It is now my second favorite wildflower after the Fairy Slipper Orchid!

The texture of this little mushroom enticed me to play with my macro lens.

And some early fall color...

I am using the new blogger interface. Uploading photos seems to take forever, but the rest of it is user friendly and a lot cleaner looking from a graphic design standpoint. Haven't figured out how to access my pages though...may have to switch back in order to add to my wildflower pages.

Harvest Time...YUM!

I returned to Colorado and immediately dove into my 1880 sampler blocks.

Nothing like the US Open Tennis Tournament and a little time with Bernie!

Just two more blocks and I will have all the patterns written through October. One more row is actually ready to set, but I will finish Autumn Houses first. I also have a pattern for a trio of mini quilts that I am itching to get started on.

My flower garden is in its full splendor and my vegetable garden is quite prolific!

The zucchini is just about to turn in to a delicious chocolate bread, the carrots and green beans will be savored with dinner tonight, those little yellow heirloom tomatoes are in my belly, and the larger red ones will be on my sandwich for lunch. Last night I used up my Japanese eggplant to make croquettes. I am a big fan of eggplant and even my husband enjoyed these. The recipe can be found here. The only thing I changed was to add some fresh basil from the plant dear Kathy gifted me and I used Parmesan flavored Panko bread crumbs.

I received a comment from a non-reply blogger (mkrlar) requesting a tutorial on how I prep for applique, especially making those sharp turns on the windows of Autumn Houses. I would love to share my tips, but I would need to do so using video.

I wonder...can that be done and shared?

Anyone know how?

We returned home this weekend to a wall of unbearable heat....116 degrees.

But I shouldn't complain...I'm not on the east coast dealing with Irene.

I pray everyone there remains safe.

Needless to say, I spent a lot of time indoors this weekend and finished this adorable shop sample by Country Threads...Pumpkins 4 Sale #220.

The girls at TOWQS have it kitted.

Also spent some time trying to applique the leaves on the willow tree in the very last block for my Autumn Houses quilt. Learned a valuable lesson...don't change something that is working.

I had been using DMC 50wt machine embroidery thread for most of the applique, using just these 3 colors.

Don't ask me what made me decide to switch to a 60wt. green Mettler thread, but I did. The small stitches I needed to use were impossible. So I switched back to the DMC and now those points are much easier to accomplish! Good thing, because I have over a dozen more of them to do!

Our dive trip to Florida Keys was a success, for the most part...

The younger crowd and my husband did a few deep dives to wrecks and had a blast. I got up close and personal with a harmless 8ft. nurse shark and survived the onslaught of the moon jellyfish that plagued the surface of the waters. But, I count our blessings that Irene left us unscathed.

That is me!

I am anxious to return to the mountains this week. My favorite time of year, Fall, should be arriving there soon. September is full of joy for us...our daughter will put her feet in the sand on Coronado Island in San Diego and exchange wedding vows with the love of her life!

I have chosen a pattern for a wedding quilt, but it is all hand pieced, so they may get it on their 1st anniversary, OR maybe their 2nd.

Changing Gears

I realized that I have an appointment with a machine quilter at the end of September, so I figured I had better change gears and get back to some hand applique.

Here is the last block for Autumn Houses by Bunnyhill.

The shapes are all pressed and glued down and now I just have a few hours of hand sewing to do. Most of the other blocks are done. Still have to finish the willow tree in the top row, a maple leaf in another block and some embroidery. Then I can piece them together and add the borders.

Needless to say, finishing this one has become my top priority.

Hiked the Highline trail on Thursday and was treated to an afternoon thunderstorm; but before the rain and hail started, I was able to capture pics of 5 new wildflowers for identification.

Amazingly, 3 of them were variations of the Gentian family.

All of the pictures were cataloged on my wildflower pages, but I had to share this one of the Fringed Gentian.

These were only about 6" tall.

We head home to Arizona on Monday. The kids and their significant others are coming with us on a diving vacation. I have all the blocks for my 1880 sampler set up for automatic postings and hope it works correctly. See you all in a few weeks.

My break from my sewing room gave me a boost of enthusiasm and I managed to get 4 more blocks for my 1880 sampler made and the patterns written.

I need to get ahead because the next 3 months will be very busy.

Using the leaders and enders method, I am also getting closer to finishing Pinwheels for Caroline.

Took a little break last week from blogland.

My cousin from Texas came for a visit and we have been hiking and taking wildflower pictures to our heart's desire. I learned so many new things about my camera from her!

I'll be back in my sewing room today hoping to get closer to a finish and more sampler blocks.

The weeds in my gardens are calling as well.

Method to my Madness

I always ponder why I have so many projects going all at once.

I think I have come up with an explanation,

or maybe I'm just rationalizing the situation.

When I work on more than one project at a time, I can use what Bonnie Hunter refers to as the 'leaders and enders' technique.

The first thing I do is cut a dozen fabric squares that I will pair together to make multiple half-square triangles out of. Then I cut the fabrics for an 1880 Sampler block. Now it is time to sew. As I piece each section of the sampler block, I chain feed in the fabrics for my HST's. That way I conserve thread and keep my machine from 'eating' my tiny fabric pieces.

3 new blocks for my sampler.

My goal this week is to make one more and then assemble the next row. I have enjoyed following the progress of several others who are piecing the sampler through the flicker site (the link can be found on my side bar.) A brown and pink color scheme seems to have become popular and quite stunning, I may add. Many are using the Julie Hendrickson Miniatures collection. One of my favorites!

The second benefit from this 'leaders and enders' technique is that Pinwheels for Caroline is growing.

I think I have finally figured out how to make the ocean waves blocks with a modicum of precision. I have already told myself that this quilt is utilitarian and therefore, I am overlooking a thread off here and there. Nothing too obvious!! That would be sacrilege for me.

But, as we all know, once it is quilted and washed, no one will see my transgressions.

We are back in Colorado and after I plucked all the weeds that had claimed my vegetable and flower gardens in the last 3 weeks, we headed to the Continental Divide. At last, the snow has receded and one of my favorite hikes above the Wolf Creek Ski Resort is now accessible.

And that means...

wildflower pictures.

I have added all the new ones to my Wildflowers of Colorado page, but I just had to share my favorite picture of the day.

You might ask what I do with my photography...

OK, my attempts at photography.

My husband makes rustic wood frames, we stain them and then a local framer finishes them up. These are pictures I took last year enlarged to 8" x 10".

They make great wall decor for the cabin.

A few hours of 'leaders and enders,' and believe it or not, I make progress on all of the first 5 projects on my priority list. Of course, you could argue that if I put that much time into just one project, I might finish it. But what fun is that?

Doll Quilt Exchange

At last...

I can show you the doll quilt I received from Nicky in Christine's doll quilt exchange.

I had given Nicky our Colorado addy and then returned to Arizona before the quilt was posted. It has been waiting patiently for me to return and claim it.

Nicky's needleturn applique is exquisite!

She chose the 'Oak Leaf and Reel' pattern with my love of all things FALL in mind. Then, she added teeny, tiny hexies in the corners knowing I love all things miniature.

I ADORE this little quilt and it will take a place of honor in my sewing room.

Celebration Time!

My beautiful mother celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday!

We traveled to Napa, California for the festivities.

What a gorgeous weekend in the valley!

It was so much fun to see old family friends and reunite with distant relatives.

My cousin from Texas flew in and had a wonderful time getting reacquainted with my son (not in the cowboy hat...that is Coleman, my son's best friend from high school.) It has been almost 15 years since she had last seen either of my children.

My lovely daughter and her special someone!

The quilt behind them on the wall is the one I made as a tribute to my mother and father. It is so nice that it hangs in a place of honor in my mother's home.

A Quilter Lives Here by Liberty Homestead

I should have taken a close up pic of the fabulous machine quilting.

Made using Jo Morton fabrics and the hand-dyed, sueded cottons from Liberty Homestead.

Her full sized version of Grandpap's Cards.

The setting fabric is from Bonnie Blue Basics...it reads grey, but is a small pattern of blue and brown. I'm thinking it would be a good choice of setting fabric for my Farmer's Wife blocks.

Just love her version! Do you think she will trade...her's is quilted and bound!!!

A Morning Visitor

I hear this fellow every morning, but have never seen him until today.

Fearless, he was unmoved by my approach. And why not, he is a Great Horned Owl.

He has no horns...his name comes from the tufts that appear similar to cat's ears.

Did you know they will attack humans to protect their young and have been known to prey on our domestic pets.

Of course, I left my telephoto lens in Colorado.

I never seem to have it when the opportunity for a great wildlife photo arises!

Finished and gifted this darling door hangar yesterday. It is Kim Diehl's design.

We are now cleaning up the dust and mud left behind by Tuesday night's Haboob.

I was picking my DD up at the airport as it approached the city. Her plane was one of the last to land before they closed down the airport.

An awesome sight!...but a mess the next day.

The sky is clearer this morning, but the air was thick all day yesterday and everything tasted like dirt.

And...

I just keep hand appliqueing Autumn Houses and making R&W blocks. I am half way done!

Red and Green Quilt...finally!

Well, actually, I participated in the creation of a red and green quilt!

A few months ago Renee Plains, of Liberty Star fame, honored me by asking if I would help her get ready for Spring Market by piecing a large quilt for her...

It was a collaborative affair...I did the piecing and she did the applique.

Whitney Erickson, co-owner of TOWQS, did the machine quilting.

As usual, it so much more vibrant in person!

No wildflowers to show here in AZ! The heat isn't as bad as I had imagined.

My R&W quilt will definitely be slow going here. I am using my daughter's machine and I don't quite have that scant 1/4" seam allowance thingy figured out yet! It took me over an hour this am to piece just one 3" block.

I had a delightful mid morning visit to the shoppe and picked up some FQs I just had to have for Caroline's Pinwheels. Let's see...I started this quilt to use up stash...I have used the last of 4 different fabrics so far...I purchased 10 new FQs...I don't think I am making progress!

But you can't wipe the smile off my face!

I needed a break from my R&W quilt, so working on my Caroline's Pinwheels seemed like the perfect answer. I make one 3" R&W block each day before I allow myself to start playing with the fabrics for this one. Her instructions suggest using 4 hues...blue, red, green and gold, besides the neutrals--brown and black...which I found dull. So, I spruced it up a little with some pink and cheddar. I am finding the most important element in fabric choices is value, especially in the ocean waves border. I am having difficulty with the ocean waves blocks. I have never made them before and with each one I make I learn more about which areas are critical to points matching. Hopefully, I will have it figured out in the next few attempts. Have any words of wisdom?

It is a melancholy Monday for me. Both Serena and Venus lost today, so the women's game now holds very little interest for me. Still have my favorite male players in the mix though. Sad for American tennis, but Mardy Fish is the last one standing in singles. We can always count on the Bryan brothers to make a good run for us though!

Wimbledon takes the first Sunday of the tournament off, so we hiked a new trail on the east side of the San Juan Mountains. I was very proud that I climbed to an elevation of about 12,600 ft. If you are wondering, I am training so I can hike Macchu Picchu in the fall.

I have added a page at the top below my header if you want to see more of the wildflowers I photograph. I have also identified them. Here is the highlight pic of the hike:

White Globeflower...found in marshy areas near streams and creeks.

The boggy slope of Kitty Creek was covered in them. Some almost had a peachy hue to them.

First time I had seen this one.

Also liked the vibrant Parry Primrose...also an alpine stream dweller.

I am flying back to AZ on Wed.

I am anxious get some retail therapy at TOWQS.

New wools arrived as well as some new fabric lines.

Hope I can show some restraint!

A new coiffure is badly needed as well.

We'll be headed to Napa to celebrate my mother's 80th.

It will be sort of a family reunion.

I'll take my opportunity now to wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July!

The Secret for Me...

...in getting multitudes of HSTs made is to have a tennis tournament to watch!

And that would be Wimbledon, especially with the return of Venus and Serena Williams,

although Venus's attire is atrocious!

I am challenged with the use of the high contrast solid fabrics, so it is slow going.

I've already started to plan a border. Thinking maybe some red on white applique, but not floral.

We'll see if I have any enthusiasm left once the center is finished!

The tennis was rained out the other day, so we fit in a hike to the very sedate Coal Creek...which is more like a babbling brook. Tall ferns and giant flowering plants surrounded the creek and made for some great photo opportunities.

These flower stalks were on plants that were chest high and had fernlike leaves. My best guess is it is a subalpine Larkspur of some sort. Our hike was cut short when I saw an animal print in the mud around the creek and asked my DH what it might be.

"Probably a large cat," he said.

Suddenly realizing the effect that would have on me, he tried to change his opinion.

"No, probably someone's dog," was his second answer, even though we had seen no other prints besides sign of free range cattle on the entire walk. Needless to say, I decided I had had enough for the day. Still managed to get a fair amount of uphill cardio before my downhill retreat.

A Weekend's Work

I decided to get at least one of the samples for TOWQS done to take back with me.

This is Winter #577 by Country Threads.

It is fusible applique, so the next step is to decide how to anchor the shapes...

buttonhole stitch around them all or

stitch them down as I quilt.

The second choice will be faster, but I will let the girls at the shoppe decide which finish they want.

I also managed to catch up with my Civil War BOWs.

Calico Puzzle

I have been talking about a red and white quilt for some time now, so I finally started it.

I am fascinated by the illusion created by these two color HSTs.

Half the block looks like white triangles on red and the other half looks like red triangles on white.

I'll be using this illusion in my setting design.

I only have 540 HSTs to make and 57 more of these 3" finished blocks!

Better get busy!

A Rare Find!

This post is not about quilting...you don't have to look at Autumn Houses one more time!

Yesterday we hiked to Fourmile Falls and on the way I spotted a small speck of purple off the trail. When I went to investigate, I was rewarded with the Calypso Orchid, or Fairy Slipper. This delicate orchid tends to favor sheltered areas on conifer forest floors and is endangered in the US. It is also only about 1" in size and we all know how I love miniature things!

Thank goodness it isn't four miles of hiking to get to the falls, because the last climb had my legs feeling like lead weights. I am still not elevation acclimated.

Good news...Midnight accompanied the cowboys out to the meadow this am. He stayed clear of the skunk's lair and ran to his heart's desire.

Sweet Carolina

I saw this little quilt first on Quilt Hollow's blog; and when my magazine arrived, I just could not resist it. It will end up as a pillow or a wallhanging in the guest bedroom. It can be found in the August 2011 issue of APQ magazine and was designed by Annemarie S. Yohnk. Now I just need to find the perfect medium value tan for the first inner border and then I will try to mimic the quilting design.

I have made lots of progress on Autumn Houses.

Even though the shapes are made, there are many little applique stitches that still need to be sewn.

Block 1, 3 and 6 are totally completed and 4, 5 & 7 are half done.

I was thrilled to see that Nives, from Northern Italy, and Kathie, from Sydney, Australia, have posted their recent 1880 sampler blocks on the flicker site. Nives' blocks are closer to the same colors as mine, but Kathie has chosen a brown and pink theme that is very warm and inviting. I hope to have collages of their blocks to share, but if you can't wait to see them, check them out here.

Today's goal is to get my exchange blocks made for my SSQSG meeting in July. They need to be 4" finished blocks and I need 6 of them. We exchange blocks every other month. I missed the June meeting, but you can read all about it on Merumo's blog and see her collection of blocks so far.

Sunday Funnies

I'll get to some quilt related pics after I share a little tale with you.

There is a riding stables near our cabin and every evening, they release the horses into the meadow behind us to graze and romp around. Each morning the cowboy rides out to round up the group accompanied by his dog, Midnight.

How do I know the dog's name?

Yesterday morning, the dog meet our other evening guest in the meadow and being a curious fellow, decided to check it out.

Next thing I hear is, "No, Midnight, No!"

Too late!

Poor Midnight was pawing at his nose and rolling in the grass while the horses made a speedy retreat into the trees. I don't know who I felt worse for...the dog or the cowboy.

Needless to say, Midnight didn't join the cowboy on this mornings roundup!

Autumn's Finale by Ruan Robertson arrived in the mail. I could not be more pleased with my purchase and donation to the AAQI cause. I love her use of decorative stitches in the quilting and applique. According to the info on the site, the background fabrics were hand dyed by her, and don't you love the striped binding she chose. A true work of art!

I managed to get another Autumn House done. I am working furiously to prep as many of the blocks as I can before I return to AZ. I won't have my machine for 3+ weeks, so I need some handwork. My daughter has her machine that I can use, but I can't take all my fabrics home on the plane.

We did fit in a hike to the stunning Silver Creek Falls yesterday. With the snow still melting in the high country, all the rivers and creeks are running high, making for some impressive cascading water.

We continued above the falls, and around 8,000 ft I captured some pictures of a very unusual vine that was winding its way around the trees and bushes.

I have been unable to identify it in my Guide to Colorado Wildflowers, but later today I'll do a search and see what I can find out about this ephemeral beauty.

I managed to get this week's CW block from Barbara Brackman's site done.

I didn't like it until I saw my blog friend, Merilyn's, block.

I didn't have a fabulous floral stripe, but this came close and looks rather handsome on point, which is how I plan to set my blocks. I have become obsessed with on-point settings recently.

On the topic of the anniversary of the Civil War, I found a new blog to follow called The Civil War Quilter. Becky is working on a book that I will be anxious to see and reproduces Civil War era quilts. Make sure to read her April 30th post about Love and Valor.

My feet are on ice, hoping to reduce the inflammation so I can get back in my hiking boots.

But, until then, I am making lots of quilting progress...

3 more 1880 sampler blocks, more pinwheels and some gifts that I can't show.

I can't go exploring for wildflowers to photograph,

but at least my garden is starting to bloom.

My favorite color in the garden is purple...can't you tell!

And these are the pine cones on the Colorado Blue Spruce that are planted around the perimeter of our land. My Snow in Summer is finally getting its little white flowers and I love the contrast with the Dianthus. I am an amatuer gardener, but sometimes my combos actually work.

Grandpap's Cards

Nothing like a weekend of French Open tennis and broken down internet service to get a small quilt pieced! I don't have a good inner border fabric in my stash; so unless the LQS has something, Grandpap's Cards will have to wait until I get back to AZ and TOWQS to qualify as a real finish.

I drafted the Crosses and Losses blocks down to 3" and have the perfect spot for it on my bedroom wall. I also think I will try tea dyeing to make it look even more antique.

On the subject of our LQS here in Pagosa Springs...it is a small cubby in the back of the local Mercantile, where hunting and fishing supplies seem to be the main fare. The owner still manages to have a fairly good selection and carries mostly Moda fabrics, some reproductions, and a sampling of batiks.

I also spent some time getting block #3 of Autumn Houses done, sans the embroidery.

It still needs a little squirrel in the bottom corner, but I don't have the perfect fabric for that either. That makes two things to look for at the LQS. I use the starch and glue prep method for my applique and I am trying out a new archival glue from Jillily Studio called Appli-Glue. Like it so far, especially the non-clogging tip; but the real test will be to see how water soluble it is. I always rinse my applique after it is done to loosen and remove the glue.

We have been experiencing heavy smoke in the skies from the fires burning near Alpine in AZ. I have several friends with cabins in the area and pray they are safe.

Sorry that I posted this week's block a little early...I got a little over zealous and pushed the wrong button.

I am loving this quilt even more now than when I first started it.

We found a field of Wild Iris near a natural spring.

I sure enjoyed the hike, but I'm a little hobbled today. New shoes, but I had worn them several times previous. Oh well, a few days with my feet up will just mean more quilting time.

Progress on Two Fronts

Our attempt to hike at the Continental Divide was a total wash...literally!

There is still 1-2 feet of snow on the ground at 11,000 feet.

Instead, we stopped at Treasure Falls.

Memorial Day ushered in a cold front and howling winds that dropped the temperatures in Pagosa Springs down to 29 degrees. This is the effect it had on the surrounds of the lookout area of the falls.

Stunningly beautiful icicles everywhere!

We will just have to hike at lower elevations for awhile.

Autumn Houses is progressing nicely. Hope I can keep up my present enthusiam for this project. I've said it before...I love fall colors and pumpkins and quilts with houses in them.

Also managed to get a handle on the weeds in my perrenial garden, plus add a few more plants and subdivide others. Since our growing season is so short, my garden will not be in its full glory until later this summer or early fall. Today's goal is to get the vegetable garden planted and my tomato plant installed in the greenhouse. Maybe I'll put in some bell peppers to keep it company. DH wanted strawberries, so he has built a screened cage to protect them from the birds. Hope it works! Carrots, green beans, zucchini and pumpkins will join them. We are keeping the garden small this year.

My goal today is to finish one more 1880 block and then sew together the next row. It will be just over half done then! I am anxious to get to the black and pink border!

If I get that done, then I give myself permission to piece a quick small quilt. Got the pattern for Grandpap's Cards by Carol Hopkins Designs in the mail yesterday. I had seen the quilt in Temecula and managed to find the perfect taupe fabric, so stay tuned.

Quilter's ADHD!

I know we all joke about how many projects we have going at one time, but my quilter's ADHD has gotten a little out of control. Since we relocated to Colorado, I have been rising early (nothing new for me) and sewing while I watch the French Open on my laptop.

So, in this corner, we have my 1880 Sampler Quilt in progress.

(A note for Kathy G: there was no return email for me to send you a pdf that hopefully your MAC can download. Please send one. )

I have not heard of any other problems downloading the pattern for the Goose in the Pond variation block, but I may add a simple block to use in its place, if need be.

In this nook, we have Bunnyhill's Autumn Houses started.

And under my cutting table, I have started Pinwheels for Caroline by Lori Smith. My WIP list had gotten under 10 items, so what the heck! Besides, this will use up a lot of my reproduction stash! Believe it or not, it will be a lap size quilt when finished. I am shocked too!

I love a challenge and today's CW block certainly was one!

Also finished up the Little Blue Basket block that I had put off doing.

My blocks have been redrafted to 6", so this one had to be foundation paper pieced. 8" just seemed so big to me ;o)

A little FMQ fun

We had a refreshing rain storm blow in this week, so our trek north was postponed until next week. I took advantage of the extra time to finish my doll quilt for Nicky.

Then I had some fun with some free motion machine quilting. I still do my quilting on my old Bernina 1090 without the luxury of stitch control. A fabulous quilting teacher at TOWQS named Carol set me free last year when it comes to free motion quilting. Nothing is marked...I just start drawing...true to the method Carol taught us.

It will be hard to part with this quilt!

Also managed to finish printing and packaging 25 copies of my pattern.

One is on its way to Ann Seely, whose quilt was my inspiration, and three are already off to customers. The rest will be available at TOWQS after I deliver them today. I had a wonderful response to the quilt with many requests for the pattern.

Speaking of patterns...I did a little piecing for a local designer and the quilt I helped her with made its debut at Quilt Market. I am hoping to share it with you soon.

Flying the Coop!

We are getting ready to make our summer journey north to cooler temperatures, and like a true blue procrastinator, I have tons of things to get done in the next few days. It didn't help that a stomach virus knocked me for a loop this weekend, but I am back with a venegenance today. Besides all the chores involved in leaving your home for months at a time, there are a few other pressing matters that need my attention.

First was getting the block drafted, made and the pattern written for this week's 1880 Sampler Quilt. Oh, how I love this one. These little detailed blocks are like a quilt in and of themselves.

Then I got distracted by a new book, Fat Quarter Winners, by Monique Dillard.

Added to the distraction was the arrival of Judie Rothermel's new line called the Bancroft Collection. A technique that oversizes and then custom cuts the units is right up my alley! The Fit to Be Geese ruler and technique seemed like extra work until I realized that I am always checking the grid dimension and trimming up my flying geese even when I don't make them oversized, so this method does save me the time of marking diagonal lines on the backs of all those little squares.

Since I missed work on Saturday due to illness, I will spend this morning finishing up the kits for these two projects from Country Threads.

I like to take some projects to do over the summer that will be shop samples at TOWQS in the fall.

And if I have time left over today, I will head to Kinko's to do some copying for my Autumn's Bounty quilt pattern. Yes, you guessed it. I have left it to the last minute. But honestly, I work best under pressure!

A Simple and Satisfying Saturday!

I just love a day like today.

Watched a tennis match between my two favorites stars, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal (lounging in my pajamas until 10am!)

Then played a little game myself called...

Catch Up.

Now I am only 2 blocks shy of being up-to-date with my Civil War BOW.

Fort Sumtner is my favorite block so far; but now I want to go back and remake some of the other blocks to be as dramatic in color. I always do this in a sampler quilt project, but I am going to follow my own advice and just wait until the end and see how they all work together.

A Sneak Peek

I decided to participate in the second round of Christine's doll quilt exchange and after much deliberation, I have finally chosen my pattern for my exchange partner, Nicky at Sew-Organized.

This is always a grueling process...I worry whether she will like the color, pattern, etc.

I decided to contribute to this year's auction quilt for Linda, of Quilts in the Barn fame, to raise funds for breast cancer research. Jo Morton, one of my fav designers, will be the star of the show this year and I would love to attend. Alas, Macchu Picchu calls this fall and then I am determined to make it to the Houston Quilt Show (yes, Rosie and Kay...this is me inviting myself!)

My contribution is on it's way down under.

Friday is the monthly meeting of the Farmer's Wife Sampler Club at TOWQS, so I am busy drafting and constructing my blocks. Here is this morning's progress:

May's theme is baskets.

I purchased my red and white Bella Solids today. I have selected my pattern from a quilt featured on Barbara Brackman's blog. I am determined to make a red and white quilt!

Vacation...

Three dives a day for 5 days straight...coming up to replenish fluids and carbohydrates and then back down we would go. And who said that the sun going down had to deter us?

DD goes back to school today and I plan to get some rest...that is after I catch up on all the blogs I like to read and check out how big the Decorah eaglets have grown.

Quilts of Valor

My daughter finished piecing this quilt top Sunday made from Marcus Brothers QOVC fabrics. Very patriotic with vibrant reds! The center is a panel, which makes the quilt look complicated, but it was rather easy to piece. It measures about 62"x82". A nice lap size quilt.

And besides keeping an eye on those adorable eagles in Iowa...did you see how big their feet are getting!...I pieced another block for my 1880 Barbara Bucher Snyder Sampler quilt.

Goose in the Pond Variation

It may be my favorite so far. I had to resort to paper foundation piecing it though, and will spend some time in the next few weeks figuring out how I can transfer the pattern to followers. Others have done it, so I know it can be done.

I am off to a tropical location next week, so I will catch up with everyone in a few.

1880 Barbara Bucher Snyder Sampler Quilt Update

Haste, Makes Waste!!

I am diligently working on checking things off my UFO/WIP list.

Hopefully, this darling table topper from Kim Diehl's book, Simple Seasons, will be done in time for Easter next year if I just work an hour a day on the applique.

However, when I rush to the finish line, it gets further and further away.

My Album Quilt, from Kathleen Tracy's new book, Civil War Sewing Circle, was this close to a finish when I noticed I had placed three VERY similar blocks all together (they are on the right side and all 3 blocks use the same brown fabric and 2 blocks are identical.) Yikes! Time for a little unsewing.

Good reason to see what the Decorah Eagles are up to and work on a little hand applique!

Making Progress

I spent the last two days challenging myself and striking another project off my UFO/WIP list!!

I machine quilted this top for a friend to help raise funds for breast cancer research.

The challenge was to replicate the quilting that had already been done.

The pre-existing quilting was little ribbons with roses in the middle of them.

I used freezer paper to draw a replica, made several copies and then ironed them randomly over the quilt top. I then free motioned around the shapes, connecting them with a little flourish. This is a technique I have adapted from Mary Mashuta. She uses freezer paper templates and a walking foot, but why not use the templates to make my free motion shapes more consistent. This isn't the first time I have used this technique and it will not be the last.

I made one more CW block, but I am still behind! My friend, Doreen, from Aunt Reen's Place, placed my past blocks in a quilt block grid for me. I'll have to get it posted to my sidebar.

Next up is to set all the blocks for my album quilt.

I'm making progress...and the list is getting smaller.

Argentinian Giants

The first bloom on my Argentinian Giant Cactus.

This bloom is almost 7" in diameter and will last only one day.

Luckily, there are over 20 blooms on the plant this year.

Several years ago, I attended a seminar by Ruth McDowell.

A picture of these magnificient flowers was the inspiration for the quilt I designed during the week long seminar. I called it 'Argentinian Giants Tossed with Swiss Chard.'

The flowers range from my white one to some very intense magenta colored ones. Examples of the full range of colors can be found sprinkled among the gardens in our neighborhood.

It amazes me the delicate beauty that can be found in this harsh environment.

Temperatures over 100 were recorded this last week downtown.

It is getting close to time to head north!

A Day at the Beach

Every once in awhile I like to do something out of the box for me. This weekend's project with my DD, who has very different fabric tastes than I do, was a simple landscape scene from the book, Accidental Landscapes, by Karen Eckmeier.

Here is a close up view of the seed bead embellishment in the sand.

And some thread couching in the surf.

Still have a little more embellishing to do and then it will be framed.

Looks pretty realistic to me.

Just need to park myself on a lounge chair in the sand, read a good book, and listen to the waves lap up on the shore...I wish.

Blogging Frustration!

Is it my computer, my internet server or blogger?

It can take what seems like ages to open a post from the blogs I follow and another eternity to try and leave a message. Since I do not have much patience, I have not kept up with reading and commenting. I have tried, believe me! So please forgive me for not leaving a comment. I know their importance and will keep trying.

In the meantime, I have been busy.

Finished piecing Paris in the Fall by This and That, a BOM available at TOWQS.

A small group of gals all worked together to each make one and we had a little party Thursday to celebrate its completion, but that is a story best kept to myself. LOL!

Who knew almond flavored champagne was so tasty!

I did manage to complete 1 more CW block, but I am still 2 behind.

I am anxious to make a red and white quilt! I have loved seeing all the pictures and reading the articles about the show in NYC. Wish I could have seen it in person!

Doll Quilt Exchange

I received my doll quilt from Lisa of Stray Threads yesterday.

I simply adore it!

She even took the time to hand quilt it.

I don't have a doll bed, so the only doll I have from my childhood (she is a Hawaiian doll given to me by my grandmother--her grass skirt has disintegrated over the years) proudly took possession of the quilt. Since she is lacking in apparel, the quilt will keep her warm and I will be shopping for a doll bed for the two of them while antique shopping this summer.

Yes, even though I had to endure bonehead English in college, I am a guest blogger over at Sew We Quilt @ Stash Manicure!

Probably the scariest thing I have done in recent years, besides get my scuba certification.

Big hugs to M. Samm for even considering me for this honor!

And a bigger hug to my editor-in-chief, Rosie, for giving me my lead in lines.

My focus is charitable donations and the tutorial I provided is geared towards FAST, FUN, and NO FUSS quilt piecing. I know, so out of the box for me, the precision piecer, but I did have a blast putting the quilt together. I had so much fun that I have started another one that is red, white and blue and will go to the Quilts of Valor organization. I would encourage you to collect those orphan fabrics and make a quilt designated for a charitable organization of your choice. There are so many of them out there that would love your contribution, no matter how humble.

In other news, I finished a doll quilt from Kathleen Tracy's new book, The Civil War Sewing Circle. It is her Shoofly Doll Quilt.

I also bound my Calico Comfort quilt and can take it off my UFO/WIP priority list.

Now on to the next project~

I'm seeing blue!

Last night was the opening night of the Arizona Quilters Guild Quilt Show for 2011, Along the Desert Highway. It is always an inspiring show full of beautiful quilts.

The state is full of artists who express themselves through the use of fabric and fiber, as exemplified by the Best of Show quilt by Karen Fisher from Tucson.

There are still a few traditional quilters in the state and I am one of them.
I was thrilled to capture a blue ribbon for my quilt, Autumn's Bounty.

I hate to be photographed, so I am clinching my teeth as I post this picture, but I am very proud of the award.
For those of you who follow me regularly, you will remember this quilt from last spring. My dear friend, Lin, brought a quilt to my attention at that time and the wheels started churning. The quilt was Fall Harvest by Ann Seely and was published on the cover of QNM back in October 2000. I wrote to Ann asking her permission to reproduce her quilt in small scale and she graciously consented. That is why Lin's name is on the label of my winning quilt as part of my inspiration.
Many have asked about the pattern. I will be publishing it in April and it will be available only at The Olde World Quilt Shoppe where I teach, but I have to get a copy to Ann first. That was her only stipulation.

Just in case you are wondering, Serendipity Found, my large applique quilt from Kim Diehl's pattern Serendipity Sampler, won a 3rd place ribbon as well. Baltimore album quilts made a big comeback this year at the show and took some of the top honors.

I hope this post makes it to you all as Blogger is getting quite obstinate. I have been experiecing lots of difficulty uploading photos, reading other's post and leaving comments.
Frustrating for a true blogaholic!

1880 Barbara Bucher Snyder Sampler Quilt Update

Charlene from New Hampshire sent me a beautiful collage of her 1880 sampler blocks.

She is doing a great job and the fabrics she has chosen are so true to the original quilt.

Life happened over the last few days, so the setting and sashing instructions are coming sometime this week.

The AAQI auction is going on the first half of this month.

Lucky Charm

Here is my Shamrock.

More like a four leaf clover and a little anemic.

Could have been more dramatic in a poison green, but I didn't have enough variety in that color way.

Here is the layout:

To set it on point, I cut two 5"x 8" rectangles and with the right sides facing up, cut them in half at a 30 degree angle.

Applied these units to all four sides of the 7" twister and then...

squared it up to 8.5" x 8.5". Made a 1/4" bias stem and appliqued it on.

One of the things I like best about blogging is all the new people you can meet from all over the world. I received these pictures of Nive's 1880 Sampler blocks today. Nive lives in a small town in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy. She is doing a fabulous job and is using fabrics from her stash.

Then...

a surprise squishy package arrives in the mail from Heather over at Creative Confessions.

She is teasing me with these lovely precut hexagons and the precut paper templates. I imagine she expects to see my first hexie soon. We are going on a little getaway (far, far away from my sewing machine...sigh) and so a handwork project seems to be in order.

A February Full of Finishes!

I am quite proud of myself.

February was a very productive and satisfying month for me.

I finished (now that is a word you will not often see me use!)

3 items on my UFO/WIP priority list, in addition to completing 4 small quilts, and managed to fit in 50 siggy blocks.

I have made 3 more CW blocks for Barbara Brackman's BOW.

Decided to add in a little gold...the red, white and blue got a little stale for me.

Kinda like that khaki colored background behind the blocks.

Just got a new Bonnie Blue basics in TOWQS that might be the perfect sashing color for these puppies. Hmmm, food for thought.

I have updated my UFO/WIP list to include 3 new projects I am anxious to start and hopefully someday finish. Kathleen Tracy over at the Small Quilt Talk Yahoo Group is having a UFO challenge. Even though binding my Calico Comfort, her design by the way, was already on my list, I have entered it as my challenge to complete.

Yah, I know what you are thinking!

So now I am ready to March right on in to a new month!

A little this and a little that...

Right now, I am busy binding Serendipity found. Not an exciting process, so I dabble in a few other projects to keep myself entertained (or from going crazy---binding is my least favorite part of a quilt!)

Finished the last block for the Paris in the Fall BOM at TOWQS.

It was a challenging block to say the least.

Then doing what I love to do best...

drafting and piecing blocks for the Farmer's Wife Quilt.

The rest of the time...

I keep making siggy blocks for my Album Quilt designed by Kathleen Tracy.

Mine will be 4x4 and I am waiting for a few more signed blocks to return before I piece it together.

I love Kathy's patterns--accurate and easy to follow instructions.

Not all patterns are like that!

Others have been busy too.

Satu's recent additions to her 1880 Sampler (her blog can be found here) and...

Bettina (her blog can be found here) always keeps current.

Charlene in NH just contacted me and I expect pictures of all of her blocks soon.

Another block pattern posted today for a total of 9, enough to assemble the first 3 diagonal rows, so next week I will include sashing and setting triangle cutting instructions.

I haven't made the last two installments in Barbara Brackman's Civil War BOW.

Other priorities right now and they look easy, so I can catch up.

And, BTW, my inspiration for my Valentine Twister quilt came from Jeanne over at Crystal Creek Quilts.

Spring is around the corner, so I think I will head to the plant nursery today for some cheery annuals. The frost we had in Jan. and Feb. did a number on our yard. I have 4 diagonal rows set so far.

Our Guest Quilter

One Sunday afternoon a month, I participate in a Small Scale Quilt Study Group.

It is somewhat a misnomer...we primarily share all the wonderful small projects we are working on, as well as the large. Visit Merumo at her blog to get a recap of all the ladies work.

The story of our guest quilter....

I meet Cheryl 3 years ago when we both became teachers at TOWQS.

Cheryl's talent lies in her needle turn applique and her specialty is pictorial quilts. Cheryl taught her first class, but was suffering from a sinus infection at the time. It was a two part class and she never made it to that second session. We received the news that she was in the hospital...

in a coma...

viral meningitis.

We were all shocked and horrified that our new friend was battling for her life.

After 3 months in a coma, she was transferred to a rehab hospital and that was the last I had heard of her until the end of November 2010.

Her SIL brought her into the shop on a day Lin and I were holding down the fort.

It was so wonderful to see her and she was still that gracious, elegant woman I had meet 3 years prior.

One thing had changed.....she had lost her sight.

The tragedy seemed to effect us more than it did Cheryl. A deeply religious woman, she found blessings in her situation.

"Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't have wanted this to happen, but so many good things have come my way because of it."

Not being able to quilt was the one thing that saddened her most.

We are working on a plan to get her back to her beloved handwork.

As she says, "It doesn't have to be perfect. I can't see it anyways!"

I would love now to share Cheryl's exquisite work prior to her blindness.

Believe it or not, this is her first hand quilted project.

I am going to give you a block by block tour so you can begin to appreciate the detail and embellishment. Of course, I am sorry you all were not there to see it in person.

There are a few buttons, but most of the embellishment is done with ribbon embroidery.

We will start with one of her favorites, the Outhouse.

She remembers that she was working on this one the day Princess Di passed.

Being a fan of Cardinals (and that has nothing to do with our AZ football team!), this is a favorite of mine.

The Foxgloves and Calla Lily plants are my favorites in this cottage garden.

Note the path with the dog paw prints, the little fella headed to the fire hydrant and that pebbled foot bridge.

The Wisteria on this center block is so much more vibrant in person.

She'll be back to share her lighthouse pictorial quilt with us and start hand piecing the first hexies for her next quilt.

Cheryl remains hopeful that she will regain some sight.

She saw a small patch of blue sky the other day that brought her to tears.

For me, I know I will gain more from my relationship with her than I can ever give back, but we are sure going to give it our best to get her quilting again.

I have a new participant in my 1880 Sampler Quilt Along.

Mary from Quilting in OZ (her blog) has joined in and caught up with the rest of us in no time.

And Jill from PA surprised me with this picture of all her SAL blocks. They are pieced and she is playing with the setting. She did a fantastic job.

She made duplicates of some of the blocks that she originally didn't like her color choices for, and then decided she liked them after all. I try to tell my beginners, who learn to piece by doing a sampler quilt, to wait until the end to make changes to blocks.

I should listen to my own advice.

I cannot tell you how many times I will remake a block until I am happy with my fabric selections!

All 50 siggy blocks are done and ready to be autographed.

I think I was dreaming of Spring when I chose the fabrics for these fellas.

Today is the monthly meeting of my SSQSG and we are exchanging signature blocks.

We are also expecting a much anticipated guest.

I'll be back to tell you all about her visit if she makes it.

Hopefully, she will bring some of her exquisite quilts to share!

1880 Barbara Bucher Snyder Sample Quilt Update

Satu in Finland is keeping on track.

And Doreen made two this week to get caught up.

I made 3 more blocks this week, but only 2 are keepers.

I'm busy finishing up siggy blocks.

All my quilts should be coming home from the quilter's in the next few days, so panic is starting to set in.

Deadlines are looming.

I am going to give Jean Wells' trick of using grosgrain in the binding so my show quilts will hang nicely. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Bindings have never been my strong suit!

This week will be consumed with signature blocks.

First I will make 50 siggy blocks for my Small Quilt Talk Yahoo group's exchange.

The fabric is washed and ironed, ready to start.

Then I'll continue to work on my Album Quilt from Kathleen Tracy's new book,

The Civil War Sewing Circle.

Just waiting on a few signatures.

I finished piecing my doll quilt for Christine's exchange.

I attempted to reproduce an antique doll quilt.

February Focus

Recently, Madame Samm asked the question, "What will you throw your heart into in February?"

My answer was 'quilts for charity.'

My goal is to make one quilt for the Linus Project, above is a sneak peek.

Machine quilt a Breast Cancer Fundraising Quilt.

Finally, finish the sleeve on my Alzheimer's Quilt Initiative donation and get it in the mail!!

Next in line is to finish the one I started for the Quilts of Valor. It will be added to my list of 10 WIP/UFOs I am working to finish. It will take its place after my Kim Diehl quilt is bound and removed from the top of the list.

I really do have good intentions and it helps me to publicly declare them.

Keeps me focused and committed.

Next 1880 Sampler block

Pennyslvania Block

I decided to keep it simple this week after last week's challenge. This Pennyslvania block is not my favorite, but I felt it needed to be included since Barbara Bucher Snyder lived in Lancaster County. Doreen, my source for all things historically related to these blocks, tells me it was a popular block in the Lancaster area and the design most likely came from the hand woven coverlets that the Pennsylvania German (dutch) women made in the 1790's.

I don't have a name for this one yet. Many of her blocks were drafted from floor tiles found in churches, so they may not have official block names. We'll see what Doreen can come up with.

Teaching, Tennis and Time!

I finished my Kim Diehl quilt top, so I rewarded myself with a small quilt from Lori Smith called 'Nine Patch Nostalgia.' I am handquilting it with my new YLI thread that I had read so much about. So far, I like it. I'm using wool batt again, and it is heavenly.

Speaking of heavenly, handquilting is the perfect activity while I enjoy watching the Aussie Open Tennis. A belated Happy Australian Day to all my Aussie friends!

The 'fly by' over Kim Clisjters' match was quite a sight.

My friend, Doreen, sent me some of her 'gray' reproduction fabrics from her stash. Now how can I NOT participate in Barbara Brackman's Civil War BOTW.

Here is my Block #4.

The grey stripe is one of the fabrics Doreen sent me.

I am making my blocks 6" finished and when I drafted this one, it came out looking a little strange. I think the bars in the middle square should have been wider. Oh well.

Two SAL participants had a little online sew-in last weekend and helped each other finish their quilt tops.

Congratulations on finishing them ladies.

Both of the quilts are stunning.

I must apologize. I have been up to my elbows with teaching and meeting deadlines that I have had little time for the computer. I have not been blog hopping and commenting like I would like to.

Hopefully, next week, I can free up some time and get back to perusing all the wonderful and inspiring blogs again.

Today's goal is to write the patterns for 10 blocks for the Farmer's Wife Sampler club, continue hand quilting, prep for Paris in the Fall BOM class tomorrow, hike Pinnacle Peak and of course, watch the tennis. Whew, sounds like a busy day.

Road Trip Report

Road To California!

Not as bad as I thought it would be.

Lin didn't mind my driving skills (at least not to my knowledge!) Luckily we were driving in to Ontario opposite rush hour traffic flow. Our accommodations were a stone's throw from the Ontario Convention Center and could not have been more convenient!
And now.....THE SHOW!

You may be disappointed. I have very few pictures to share. Tomorrow morning my blog friend Linda will post lots of pictures, so make sure you check here.
We opted to do the vendors first and you know the rules there...

no photos and no sketching!

Can you blame them?

Primitive Gatherings was our first stop and believe me, I blew my budget all in one place.

A kit, several patterns, some wool, little 2 1/2" sample packets, and a few spools of Valdani and I had a smile from ear to ear. Yes, I did pick up the littlest 'twister' ruler known to man!

By midday, I had toyed with purchasing John Flynn's machine quilting contraption and Lin had her eye on a stunning built-in sewing center.

Stopped by Debbie Busby's booth and picked up a few patterns and YLI hand quilting thread. It is what she uses to stab stitch on her wool. Her patterns can be found at Wooden Spool Designs.

Oh, my gosh! The quilts! We must see the quilts. Credit cards safely secured, we made our way into the center isles so painstakingly adorned with what should have been the center of attraction.

I apologize! I did not capture many pictures of the quilts. By this time, my feet ached and I think I had left my enthusiasm back in aisle 100.

This underwater scene intrigued me, being a nut about scuba diving!

Like Houston, the focus of the show was the art quilts and the exquisite machine quilting artists.

I did love this one for its use of color.

Of course, I loved this sampler and snapped this pic as inspiration on how to set my Farmer's Wife Sampler blocks.

Friday we did 4 quilt shops!

My favorite was by far the Quilters Coop in Temecula.

I'll be returning to Temecula to do some serious antiquing in the future, as well as some wine tasting!

Loved the sign in the parking lot of The Fat Quarter Shop. Lots of Cheri Payne's work was on display and I purchased the border fabric for the one pattern I have of hers.

Last stop was Country Loft. Coffee and baked goods were a welcome sight. We barely made it before they closed, but I am thankful we did. I found a putty colored border fabric I had been searching for.

All in all, a great trip. Just a little exhausted from the driving and all the chores I had to catch up on today to get ready for a very busy week of classes.

On the Road to California! WooHoo!

I'm having the best morning, unlike a few days ago.

I have the Australian Open Tennis on the tellie and Roger is in a battle in the 5th set.

I'm packing my bags for a road trip to California to attend the quilt show in Ontario.

We are going to include a side trip to Temecula, then down to Vista and The Fat Quarter Shop.

From there, we will head to the Country Loft near San Diego and then home.

I'll be back next week with lots of pics and a bag full of goodies to share.

In the meantime, I have been recruited to teach the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt, so I better get busy making a few blocks.

Here is my progress so far.

Right up my alley, drafting on a small scale and sharing with others.

Auction #2

Christine over at Once Upon a Quilt is auctioning off this beautiful quilt.

All proceeds will go to raise funds for flood relief in Queensland.

The quilt was made from a pattern by Sweet n' Sassy.

I made a cash donation this am through the government agency she lists in her blog posts.

My heart goes out to all the people affected by this horrendous natural disaster.

She is also asking for quilt tops or fabric donations.

Lots of options for anyone who wants to help--the auction for her first quilt donation is still on going.

Although my Saturday started off on the wrong foot (lots of foot in mouth on my part), it ended on a positive note.

I have hinted previously that TOWQS is a place where you can sometimes rub shoulders with quilting royalty. Yesterday was one of those days. The very talented and humorous Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. stopped in to pick up some of the new Primitive Gatherings Muslins.

She was so gracious and offered a few suggestions on how I could deal with my 'unsquare' quilt top.

Thank you Miss Rosie.

I don't prewash my fabrics, more out of laziness than anything else, so I will now press each piece of fabric with steam and a good dose of spray sizing or light starch prior to cutting.

I am positive it would have helped bunches with the homespun project.

Then when I opened up my computer after a long day of teaching new piecers, I found these.

Bettina from Spain has joined in the fun.

Look how the stripes encircle the middle square of Union Rose.

She managed to piece all 4 blocks in one day. Wow!

She will be visiting Lancaster County soon and wants to see the quilt in person.

And Satu also tackled the 72 pieces involved in the making of this block.

The one thing I enjoy most about this journey is making contact with quilters from around the world. What a joy!

A Few Solutions...

Before I get down to the meat of this post, I'll keep it light by sharing Doreen's first 2 blocks for her 1880 Sampler Quilt. Besides, everyone loves pictures.

Tudor or Union Rose and...

Cornerstones.

Now for a few solutions to the problems plaguing me.

The other day I came to the realization that I have bitten off more than I can chew!

Too many irons in the fire!

I'm not having fun!

So, I listed my WIPs and UFOs in the order of the priority and all the other things will just have to go on the back burner. I will take a deep breath and relax. Then I will start with the first project and work on it in 3 hour increments until it is done. Then do the same for the next on the list, so forth and so on.

I will withdraw from some of my commitments.

First, no brown bag quilt contest!

Although this one disappoints me, I will have to strike my name off the signature block exchange over at my Small Quilt Talk yahoo group. The group is getting too large. This one really bothers me, so I will ruminate on it for a day or two before taking action.

NO MORE sew alongs or exchanges! The Barbara Brackman Civil War BOTW will only get done if I feel I have time. Did you see this week's block? I think that is what helped me decide to back away from this one.

And with that off my chest, I also came up with a plan for my 'unsquare' quilt dilemma.

Upon the advice of my quilting friends, Kristine and Lin, I sprayed the quilt top with lots and lots of spray sizing and steam pressed the heck out of it.

Guess what?

The new center measurement was 69"--what I needed it to be.

However, the top and bottom borders are still at 65"--1" short for the outer border to fit correctly.

Did I mention that the outer border is pieced with homespun?!

So I will be sewing a smidge extra here and there when piecing the outer border and hope the machine quilter will not look at me sideways when I turn the whole thing over to her!

I am praying she can work wonders!
I love this quilt and will enter it anyways, no matter what the outcome.
It is the first thing on my list and I will get the quilt top finished by Wed., because I get to go to SoCal for a few days to the Road to California Show. Whoopee!

My queen size applique quilt is ready for the inner border.

After piecing homespun and then appliqueing large shapes onto it, the quilt top is not square.

The middle measures 68 1/4" and the sides measure 68 3/4".

The homespun is very stretchy and my inner borders are cut on the lengthwise grain with no give.

Mathmetically, the borders should have measured 69".

What dimension would you use for cutting the inner border?

I know what quilting rules tell me to do, but I have to ease a lot of fabric in and it looks 'bunched.'

Any and all advice is welcome!

My teaching schedule gets a little hectic this week, so I have been busy with the prep work for classes. I did manage to work on Lori's doll quilt along.

And I continued to draft and set the blocks for the 1880 Sampler Quilt.

With so many bloggers posting their quilt and sew alongs on Saturday, I will move up the posting of these blocks to Fridays. So look for the next block instructions tomorrow.

There were 5 Saturdays in Jan., so look for one more block this month.

I think the next one will be a little more challenging.

Her favorite block, so far, is the Tudor Rose.

My Favorite Day of the Month

Today was our monthly meeting of my small scale quilt group.

I could not ask for a better group of quilters to share with, and garner ideas from, than these ladies.

The first one to share was Kristine.

This is her 'Three Barns' designed by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.

There are something like 600 HST's in this quilt!

Kristine never ceases to amaze and thrill me with her quilts.

Her sense of color and her piecing skills are exemplary!

Surprisingly, that was all she got done since our meeting in December.

Duh!

Merumo was next, and you can see all her work here.

Do go check her out for some real eye candy!

I showed off my meager accomplishments next.

Now Lin has fallen under the spell of Lisa Bongean's technique for making nine patches.

Everyone sighed when they saw these little guys.

Could they be any cuter?

I have my eye on the little 'negative' one!!

The rest of the afternoon was occupied with sewing the binding on the following quilt.

Her 'Mourning Quilt' designed by Kathleen Tracy.

It will be a gift for a family friend who has endured several losses this last year.

Kathy spent most of November and December making a quilt for each member of her family as Christmas gifts! That was a fete, but she has given them all away!

Now all she wants is to finish something for herself.

She designed this quilt from a book inherited from her mother.

What a special commemorative quilt!

Kathy believes it was one her mother had earmarked to make for herself.

Pauline wanted a quilt for her bed and a queen size is never large enough to cover the thick mattresses we own today, so...

she made this.

She had a fat quarter bundle of Daiwo fabrics (hope I spelled that correctly) and this is what she did with them.

Stunning is all I have to say.

Can you blame me for looking forward to these meetings?
