A new year and a new project!

 Another Geoff's Mom pattern.
Karen, the Log Cabin Quilter, is where I first saw this quilt and then my friend, Lin, also made it.  Her's hangs at TOWQS and has been a huge success. The kits for the quilt have been flying out the door!
I will be helping a group of ladies construct this quilt over the next 4 months and this is my first row.  The lettering is done in wool and I used Aurifil's Lana 12/2 wool thread to machine blanket stitch it down. I had wanted to try it and this was the perfect project to do so.  It handled so nicely and did not fray or break. It made quick work of what could have been a very long process if done by hand. I will be machine appliqueing this one as well.  You can see the full quilt here. My version will not be as prim as I will be using more cotton prints and fewer homespuns.

We spent the first week of the new year in Colorado rollicking in the snow. I purposely left all my sewing projects behind, but managed to make a little progress on a McKenna Ryan landscape quilt I have been working on for several years.  It is made from batiks and is all raw edge applique. Really just lots of detailed cutting, but choosing the fabrics is the best part. Sorry, I did not take any pictures of it.  I won't work on it again until this summer.

Here is the stocking my DD and I designed and constructed for my granddaughter in those last days before Christmas.  Quick, simple, but we love it.

During the holidays, I loved seeing all the red and green quilts in blogland and on Pinterest.  Therefore, I have added one to my blockhead projects and will start on the first block today.  I have the solid red and cream fabrics, but have not found a perfect green yet.  Any suggestions?
Here is the EQ7 image.
The perfect pairing of piecing and applique for me.  It was inspired by Kim Diehl's Idaho Lily.  I am still keeping my eyes open for her new club.
Oh, it is nice to be home in my sewing room!

  1. I love this red and green quilt!!! It is going to be a stunner!!
In The Meadow is on my To Do List!! Can;t wait to see your version!

  2. "In the Meadow..." is one of my favorites!! I just love Norma Whaley's designs. Looks like you are off to a good beginning for 2014. Ann in PA

  3. I wish I could play along at the shop with you. That quilt is adorable.

Red and Green is going to be stunning, Cheryl.

    Love, love Izzy's stocking.

  4. In The Meadow is such a cute design! I don't have a machine that does blanket stitch, or I'd probably stitch one up too! What machine do you have?
Love the design for the red and green quilt... I'm going to have to suggest the "Floral Gatherings" fabric for the green... I'd even use the red and cream from that line too! :-)
When it warms up a bit, I'll be asking my LQS if they would offer the Whatnots...

  5. I love Geoff's Mom patterns and your In the Meadow is going to be so cute. Love the cute stocking you made as well. Sorry, no suggestions for the green.

  6. I am so glad you are working on the snowman quilt. The lettering is one of the last applique things I did on the quilt.

  7. Your winter project is wonderful!!
The Christmas stocking is so cute!!

  8. Love the stocking , I have 7 stockings to make for my daughter for Christmas 2014 ! Love the red , white & green quilt. It is going to be amazing !

  9. I'm afraid if my daughter and DIL saw the IN THE MEADOWS I would have to make one for each of them and one for me! Maybe in retirement... it is so cute!
A lovely and special stocking for Izzy... mostly because it was made by her Mom and Grandma!

  10. Sounds like the perfect project for the amount of snow that seems to be falling in parts of the US.
I suspect that the cute little stocking was filled to the brim with goodies for Izzy.
Very attractive new project. Can't recommend any greens but I am sure that you will find the right one. Good luck.

  11. Such a cute stocking! It looks a bit chunky which will allow bigger stuff. I always had trouble filling the stockings I made my kids because they were too narrow.

  12. I have In the Meadow on my 2014 list to do! love it!
